Notice of more new Fall bags keep landing in my inbox, just when I ought to be searching for bargains and sales, I'm thinking about new bags at full price...insane, isn't it?
Botkier seems to be done with ruffle, and moving on to fringe.
Fringe is one of those accents that depends as much on the mood of the shopper as the style of the bag. Sometimes, I love it, nothing like long strands of leather to keep you from playing with your own split ends, and other times I look at the same bag and think "overpriced dust mop".

The Botkier Morgan Satchel in an outrageous shade of purple (total love it or hate it color...i happen to love it) gives a ladylike bag the motorcycle treatment with a pair of chrome zippers flanked by fringe which is too short to be moppish, and about as subtle as fringe can get. It's got the appeal of a trigger, Botkier's first breakout bag, and still, my favorite.
This is a really fun party of a handbag, and edgy even in basic black. At $775, it's not inexpensive for a fashion color like purple, but definitely agreeable for less trendy colors.

And Morgan doesn't stop at satchels.

There is a Morgan Hobo as well, which starts out with a more casual bag, and adds fringe around the edges. A bit less rock and roll, and a bit more bland this may be a great bag for someone not ready to commit to fringe, but who must have the latest celebrity handbag looks. In the picture, it has an unshaven appearance, sort of a George Clooney stubble...sexy on a man, not so much on a handbag.
Stubble aside, the bag has perfect construction. it slouches enough to look casual, but not crumpled. The fold over zip top is shorter than the bag so it doesn't curl and wrinkle. It also has a smiley appearance (I know I can't be the only one who anthropomorphisises bags).
I can't commit to it, but I do think it has a modernized retro feel to it which is nice, but the jury is out. At $675, it's priced well for Botkier, and a value for an every day bag.

Five Men's Fashion First Impressions

The lovely Pam from Square Old Soul found this $495 Hollywould bag in the May edition of Elle's online shopping guide (in fact, it's listed under the category "What to buy RIGHT NOW"), and had to know what the Five Men thought of it.

I second that emotion, so here we go:

Brother, age 13: Is it a tree or some sort of handbag? It looks like one of those trolls with the crazy hair.

Brother, age 18: I don't know....but it would make a good friend if I was stranded on an island.

Brother, age 21: This is it? This is a purse??? Hmmm... (makes a series of confused grunts and sighs) It's interesting. It looks like that character from the Muppets. It's decent. I like it.

Father: (Laughs) Oh god. It is a self-referential non sequitur and nobody cares.

Boyfriend: I could see the professor from Gilligan's Island making that as a contraption to get in touch with the mainland. (Starts walking away) What is it, by the way?
Me: It's a bag.
Boyfriend: It's a bag?? I thought it was, like, a GMO pineapple.

Gemstones and Hearts!

Valentine's Day is creeping up on us, and I'm still listing jewelry pieces with hearts. I have gemstone hearts I should use, but I've lately been involved with the lampwork hearts that you see here. My favorite necklace with a heart is probably the one (close-up is above) I made with lampwork beads from Lynn Nurge, genuine rubies, and goldfilled beads and charms. The rubies are a generous size, nice and chunky, and the goldfilled components match the flecks of gold in these dichroic beads. Instead of graduating rubies until they were smaller and smaller, or keeping them all large (and thus making a very expensive necklace), I decided to make the ruby part of the necklace like a "collar" and join it to large-linked goldfilled chain.This ruby necklace will be a great Valentine's Day present for someone.
I bought several of these silvery pink Venetian hearts because I was so taken by the colour, the light pink laced with such a clear silvery shimmer. I liked the heart so much that I decided to keep it the star by hanging it from pink suede and adding only a touch of silver and a little faceted amethyst rondelle to the bottom. This lampwork pendant necklace can be found on the same page as the lampwork pendant necklace seen below, another heart pendant, this time from Annie Divelbiss. It, too, is laced with silver; the colours are different tones of blue-purple, and it hangs from a pretty imprinted sterling silver chain from the Karen Hill Tribes of Thailand. I've left most of the chain so that the buyer can wear it about 27 inches or have it shortened to wear as a choker.

Today we had the first snow of the year - or I should say the season, since we had no snow either in December or November. It was a wet, sleety snow, just enough to make driving difficult for drivers who aren't used to driving on slick roads and give shivers to the rest of us. How wonderful it would be to have about 6 inches of soft, powdery snow to look beautiful for a day or so, then melt away. How can it be winter without any snow?

Sorry about my blogging absence, but my perfect, loving boyfriend generously shared his cold with me so I spent most of yesterday in bed and/or watching Deadliest Catch and feeling vaguely thankful that I wasn't on a freezing Alaskan crab boat.
I'll try to get a post up later today, but if it's packed with nonsensical references to greenhorns and the Bering Sea, you'll know why.

Yes the LBD is a classic, but classic can be boring without a twist. Particularly during the summer the solid black dress can be dull and morbid. That is why I recommend Betsey Johnson’s version of the little black fabulousness.

The sweet heart neckline, fold over and big black buttons are both modern and stylish. Shoes to spice up the outfit would be these J. Reneé Sienna Croc embossed pumps. To compliment the metallic shoe choice you will want to add some color in your purse and a scarf around your neck. This Pucci scarf tied like so is super chic and fun.

Artist Statement

People can't believe my designs aren't made by machines because they are so perfectly rendered. It's like the difference between a beautiful hand-woven garment and a machine-woven cloth.

I think you can feel the hand of the artisan in our pieces. There's a warmth of spirit that remains in the silver, in the gold.

The Hardys believe in the notion of sustainable luxury, that the value of an object depends not only on the quality of its materials and the expertise of its craftsmanship, but also on the feeling of well-being of the artisan who makes it. John and Cynthia, who now have two young daughters, remain committed to the life lessons they learned from the Balinese, and they continue to make Bali their home. Eco is the new "it", and companies touting their bags as eco-friendly, vegan, earth friendly, etc fill my e-mail box. But really, I'm all for leaving a better earth for my kids, but I'm also about the shallow stuff, like carrying a cute bag, (and fun shoes, if you must know), so when the 2 meet....eco or vegan-friendly AND cute...you know I'm interested!
Jane Marvel is that company. And while the bags are not something I would give up my Koobas, and Marc Jacobs for, they are great bags for those times you need something sturdy but still good looking.
Made from laminated canvas, the bags are strong and lightweight. They are also available in any of 12 fabric choices...all lovely, and none garish or ick.

The Jitney is one of my favorites. A great tote on a shoulder strap with a wide opening, this is a perfect travel bag. The covered corners add extra durability, and will prevent additional wear. It's $96, a great price for a bag that will last for many day trips.

The wide shopping bag is similar to the Jitney, but has that dainty tote look popularized by Goyard (a coated canvas bag that sells for more than 10 times the Jane Marvel) and subsequently borrowed by Vuitton. There are 2 side slot pockets for change or keys...perfect for a bottle for any moms looking for an un-diaper bag. At $57, this bag could not be any more perfect! (take a look at the Computer Messenger, it has real diaper bag potential!)

The Duffel Weekender in the larger size is the perfect weekend bag. While it might not collapse as easily as say a LeSportsac, it is a bit sturdier and more substantial. Like most other Jane Marvel bags it's virtually waterproof and stain resistant perfect for those unexpected toiletry spills! At $118, the price is extremely reasonable.

I'm starting to think some labels could do with releasing video trailers before their collection is fully revealed as a way of enticing customers. Take All of the Above, a four-person collective based in Melbourne, Australia who operate a retail, gallery and studio space. For their SS08 collection (that's the collection that would go in place of our AW08-9 Northern Hemisphere collection...) of their in-house label Above, they have done a cute ickle video snippet. I see zips. I see zips that aren't just placed haphazardly and actually have a function to them. I see garments transforming into different things.

Oh, and I also see from their current AW08 collection that the prices are not at all exorbitant. In fact, in a flash, I bought this sheer mesh t-shirt for AUD65 for useful layering purposes.

I was also tempted by the matching sheer dress too but seeing as I have something similar, I'll limit my sheer intake for now...

So, when the SS08 collection hits the store at the end of August, I'll be there, waiting for some multiple zip action...

Lapidary and Metalsmith

In 1972, 25-year-old Lee Angelo Marraccini accompanied his wife Pam to the art studio in Washington, DC, where she was taking pottery classes. On a whim, he enrolled in a jewelry-making workshop. Within a year, he and Pam had left their jobs as high school teachers, outfitted their GMC van with a bed and camp stove, and set out on a road trip through the United States and Mexico, during which Lee met jewelers around the country and refined his technique.

In the summer of 1973, Lee and Pam landed at the Belles Artes San Miguel de Allende School of Art, where for $32 a month, they enrolled in a bohemian course of study that included drawing, ballet, guitar, and jewelry design. What artistic little vagabonds they were!

By 1974, they were back on the East coast. In the Allegheny Mountains in Paw Paw, West Virginia, they eked out a living farming organic vegetables, while Lee put all his energy into making jewelry. He started Moondance Silver that year, and peddled rings and bracelets at craft shows around the country.

Commercial success proved elusive, but Lee honed his inlay technique, and became exceedingly skilled at shaping stones on the wheel. He sought out and studied under some of the country's top jewelers, including Heiki Seepe, Robert Ebendorf, Ivy Ross, James Meyer, and Ronald Hayes Pearson. His pieces became warmer, cleaner, and more linear - the foundation of a style that would eventually become synonymous with the Marraccini name. He was designing jewelry he loved, and that he believed people would buy.

Armed with new creations, Lee hit the craft shows more frequently over the next several years. Business grew. So did his relationships with other jewelers. Gabriel Ofiesh and a group from Charlottesville, Virginia, were especially encouraging. At the same time, Wild, Wonderful West Virginia was becoming a little too wild. When floods, isolation, and harsh weather sent Lee and Pam searching for a new place to settle, Pam suggested Charlottesville. They moved in 1984.

Lee continued to develop new designs. He studied intermediate and advanced stone setting at the Revere Academy in 1986. His pieces became stronger, yet retained a sense of playfulness. They reflected his theory that jewelry should be "serious fun" for the wearer.

In 1998, Lee opened Angelo, a jewelry store in the Old Michie Building off Charlottesville's Downtown Mall. Angelo is a show house for Lee's strong, geometric designs - like his signature series of stacking rings - as well as new pieces and jewelry from other top artists.

Lee's jewelry is meticulously handcrafted at his studio several blocks from the store. They incorporate platinum, yellow and white gold, colored stones, and diamonds in warm playful designs. Lee prides himself in working with customers to create unique pieces that reflect his clients' individual tastes.

This man knows how to make some jewelry!

Mix it up

Wherever I look lately, I see mismatched patterns put together and working. If you've picked up a magazine recently, or watched nighttime soaps like Gossip Girl, or Cashmere Mafia you've definitely seen the sort of style trends that just never quite work for the real girl as well as they do for say, Carrie Bradshaw (just 9 days to the S&TC premier!!!!).
While you or I might look ridiculous in striped pants with a floral blouse, and checked jacket over it, there is one great way to grab onto the idea and not wonder if you look like a trend slave...with a great bag.

One of my favorites, is the Seven For All Mankind Mixed media Tote in red and gold. I saw this bag, the last one, I might add, in a store and could not resist. The 2 patterns work together fabulously, and are caught somewhere between tribal and retro. The bag has bronze trim which matches up with the chevron print and perfectly offsets the red geometric. There are 2 outer pockets, both very flat, so they're only useful for papers or a slim phone. The handles are on the shorter side, but long enough to toss the bag over your shoulder (though the size and shape look best in hand).
My only real complaint is that it's kind of heavy for a fabric bag, and very deep, which can make reaching things a bit more cumbersome (don't you just envy those women who seem to blindly reach into their bag and pull out whatever they need in seconds?...oh wait, maybe they're on TV too). On the plus side, it can easily hold everything, and I mean everything you need...but you'll have to carry it.
At $230, it is also very well priced for how good it looks...I was surprised that it was from Seven, and not a company more known for handbags. You can get the Seven Mixed Media Tote from Chickdowntown where it comes in 3 colors, but none mix the patterns with as much flair as the red.

Sugar or Wax?

"Jeez honey -- wax much?" ...The Sex and the City line spoken by Samantha and directed at Miranda must have spurred countless women to brave the pain and head to their nearest hair removal salon! That said, I just got back from Shobha, a small, upscale chain of hair-removal salons in NYC and tried sugaring for the first time -- I can't even describe how much better than waxing it is!! The sugar gel is made in-house from only sugar and lemon juice, and has a honey-like consistency. It works just like wax, but doesn't stick to your skin, so while it's still not the most pleasant experience, trust me, it's A LOT less painful than waxing. Shobha's staff is also super-friendly and patient, which is always important for me when I'm trying things I'm nervous about!

If you get a chance to go to Shobha ask for Promila. She was the specialist that helped me and she's incredibly sweet and amazingly efficient (I got a perfect full-bikini sugaring in only 15 minutes), and for any questions ask to speak to Alexis! Shobha also offers an array of products including some that they make themselves. They're in the processing of expanding so check-out their website for more info!

Tangerine dream

Barring the very forward G collection (which seems to have disappeared altogether) Cole Haan is one company that can always be counted on for well made, classic yet stylish handbags.
A great example is the simple medium hobo from their Village collection.

So simple, it could be boring, but Cole Haan punches it up by offering the bag in Summertime brights like this delicious orange...a color not to be underestimated or overlooked where accessories are concerned. Orange adds a nice pop without stealing the show.
The bag has an adjustable drop with a wider sleeve for added comfort and sits tucked under your arm thanks to a pliable body. Subtle seaming gives some interest to the bag, but is still very basic. The bag, which is large enough to hold a laptop, closes with a magnetic snap. Inside it's lined with an assortment of pockets and slots.
This is the sort of bag that will remain sharp looking for years to come, and thanks to it's simplicity looks far more expensive than the $375 it costs.

How many young designers can debut a collection in 2006 and by 2007 say that they’ve won a prestigious fashion award, secured a deal to sell their collection in U.K.’s most exclusive department store Harrods and have Tom Ford (savior of Gucci) take them out for a drink? Meet Gavin Davis, the U.K. designer who can claim all of the above. He’s clearly on the come up! With professional qualifications and training in the fashion and textile industry, Douglas is a dynamic, young designer who carefully researches, designs and crafts each individual piece of clothing, ensuring its uniqueness and quality.

In September 2006 Gavin Douglas won first place in the prestigious Fashion Fringe 2006 designer awards in London, England. As part of the award, Gavin won business, legal and technical support and development grants from the Centre for Fashion Enterprise and ultimately showcased his 2007 Spring/Summer collection at London’s Fashion Week.

Among his many achievements to date, his most notable are winning the Young Avant-Garde Designer of the Year award in 2004, showing in Caribbean Fashion Week 2005, Barbados Fashion Week 2006, Paris Fashion Week in October 2006, Brooklyn Fashion Week New York, taking part in the Black British Style Exhibition event and of course, getting Tom Ford to buy him a drink after Mr. Ford helped seal his fate as a judge for the Fashion Fringe award in 2006. Normally, Frilly Friday is reserved for something you might not wear out of the house. Swimwear, on the other hand, is something you probably very rarely wear in the house. So, how does swimwear end up on Frilly Friday? Well, the true definition of Frilly Friday is something that's really pretty, but not so practical. So, when applying that to swimwear, we generally think of it like this:

This V-neck swimsuit from Karla Colleto fits that bill. The front contains an interesting pattern of rings and cutaways that will leave a rather “stitched up” tan pattern if you spend too much time out in the sun. Patty Bolz began her career as a designer and goldsmith in 1980. Since that time, she has maintained a studio and a home in Camden, Maine, where she lives with her husband and three children. Over the years, Patty's work has won numerous awards, and has been exhibited in galleries and shows throughout the country, and has also been featured in books and publications on contemporary jewelry design.

Artist Statement

I regard my jewelry not only as personal ornament but as sculpture. A successful piece must be able to stand on its own artistically while being comfortable and wearable. My inspiration comes from the textures found in nature, diverse architectural elements, and from the unique characteristics of the high-karat gold and the gemstones with which I work.

I am particularly drawn to ancient jewelry, and when designing my work I strive to achieve a classical sense of timelessness, while also maintaining a contemporary element. As a jeweler and a designer, I work to bring something of this presence into my work - to create pieces with a fullness of form and a richness of detail. My designs combine a classical sense of timelessness with a contemporary appeal.

Artist Statement

My pieces include earrings, some with detachable long stems, brooches that can also become pendants, pendants, bangle and link bracelets, necklaces, and cuff links. My latest collection includes beautiful and fun stackable rings. I like my jewelry to have a sense of elegance, yet fun.

I create my jewelry in series, such as the Garden series, which features formed leaves between the winding wire and grouped stones. The metals that I work with are 14k, 18k, and 22k gold, and a little sterling silver. Color is very important to my work. I play with various combinations of metals, gemstones, and pearls, until I like the balance and composition.

Sometimes I do quick sketches on paper or on my laptop computer, and other times I just have the design in my head and start to work. As I work on each individual piece, I sometimes change a few of the details and arrive at an even better design.

My jewelry pieces are hand-fabricated and constructed through sawing, forming, soldering, polishing, and texturing. I love to solder, and even though I dislike the polishing process, this is how I like to have the final finish to my pieces. I also use various types of texture as part of the finish on some of my pieces of jewelry.

The Hill’s (and feud’s) Co-Star, Heidi’s Fashion Line

Celebutante see, celebutante do. Isn't that the way it always is? And The Hill's not being true fiction makes its biggest stars, Lauren Conrad and Heidi Montag both just celebutantes (who “worked” for it).

Months after Lauren's handbag line came out with Linea Pelle, Montag's fashion collection has just debuted with Anchor Blue, an equally obscure house to this quarter-aged fart.

If you're wondering whether Heidi has the chops to design clothing. I'm going to take her own quote to say, “No”.

“I love zebra print!” she said. “I’m obsessed with it!”

And it's all over her collection. Yayyy, she follows one trend. I love zebra print myself right now. Oh but didn't that start at least back in the Fall? Like on this handbag from Dooney & Bourke (actually a 2008 edition, but still).

What more in the advancement of design could we expect from a girl who named her line Heidiwood, with the tagline, “Welcome to La La Land!“? Mmmmmmmmm, those Las are supposed to stand for L and A, but okay... We know you live there, anyway, Heidi!

A limited treat...

I've always had high hopes for Johnny Loves Rosie accessories. Flowers in the hair, adorn, decorate etc. It should be working for me right? However for some reason, they have never really truly 'delivered' for me, often coming off as a little 'mumsy' dare I say....

However, this new high-end range of super limited accessories that is oversized, bold and less.... 'middle of the road', is completely on track for the Susie headgear accumulation goal. In fact, if i had all of these and treated to myself to a JLR treat every week as Johnny Loves Rosie plans to sell this range at Topshop Oxford Circus and also to drop six new styles every WEEK, I'd say that my goal could easily be achieved.

It really does feel like these images are catering to some bow fetishists out there (and I know there are many as I have witnessed many an oversized bow are out and about in London....).

Right now over at Wardrobe_Remix, we're playing a fun little game where you post a link to your Wardrobe_Remix photo album, and another remixer "dresses you up" by choosing different articles of clothing from your album. I chose to "dress up" the lovely Vasiliisa, which was sort of a thrill all on it's own just because she's one of my personal fashion muses.

Last night I hopped online for a quick second and while browsing my contact's photos, I noticed that Vasiliisa had a new picture. Upon looking at it, I realized it was the outfit I had chosen for her! My face broke out in the cheesiest grin ever. There's this unexplainable giddiness that comes from seeing that a girl all the way over in Finland is wearing something that I picked out for her. Dean's brother noticed the uber-grin and when I shared my excitement with him, his response was "you are such a dork... but that is pretty darn cool." Without further ado, here is said outfit:

Like I said last week, I'm going through a bit of a DIY-dry patch what with...erm... there being not enough hours in the day. It's some bad day-pie carving I know which I will try to alleviate. However, it doesn't stop me from acquiring items that are obviously MADE WITH LOVE, a quality which my DIY items are often overflowing with but rather lacking in *ahem* skill. Such is the time poor, cash rich (well...not MASSES of cash.... but in proportion to time right now.... there is definitely more of the latter...) existence that I'm living leaving me no choice but to seek out the ready-made 'Made with Love' items...

At least my new MADE WITH LOVE items are faring pretty well in the quality department. This vintage bag which I first spotted on Lady Coveted (thanks Lady C for the tip-off) and immediately snapped from Etsy has this hand painted swirly design that loosely resembles a dragon. What I love are the linear lines and the multi-coloured shading that is both on the inside, sides AND the back of the bag. I hate neglected facets and embellishment that doesn't go all the way round the back of dresses is a big pet peeve for instance.

Then there's my new SS08 Michelle Lowe Holder top which is available online. There's beading and tulle going on in the neckline and the delicate fabric is then handprinted with a black dandelion and floral pattern that goes ever so well with the touches of yellow. It's sort of easy-breezy summer compressed into a top and it has the ability to handle the hot weather today with ease (i.e. no odd sweating and I felt cool temperature-wise in it...).

I promise, my time poor ways will end soon but in the meantime, is there any frickin' way of buying a few hours? Seriously.... name the price....I'm open for negotiation here...

Precious metal jewelry is a favorite adornment as well as a treasured possession. Since the time men unearthed the secret to metal craft, precious metal jewelry has been made and worn by men and women of all ages. Irrespective of time and space, the craze for gold, silver, and recently platinum jewelry has been on the rise. Although the patterns and the processes keep changing, the appeal of precious metal jewelry is everlasting.

Eight metals are considered precious: gold, silver, and the six members of the platinum family - platinum, palladium, rhodium, ruthenium, iridium, and osmium.

Precious metals have been a part of human civilization for thousands of years. Often believed to have mystical powers, precious metals have long been appreciated for their value and their beauty. Over time, precious metals came to symbolize wealth, power, and strength.

Precious metal bracelets are the perfect accessory to the backdrop for richly-patterned fabrics, like those we see in fashions for spring and summer 2008.

GOLD

Throughout history, gold has been the foundation of many monetary systems and remains important to our economy today. Gold is also a popular metal of jewelry designers because of its versatility. It can be molded, shaped and carved into intricate jewelry designs. Its warm color is very appealing, and it doesn't rust, tarnish or corrode. The major source of the world's gold is South Africa.

14k Yellow Gold Basketweave Bracelet

A rich & splendid 14k yellow gold bracelet in basketweave with a high-polish finish is a gorgeous gift for the love of your life. An accessory she would love to show off.

Pure gold is so soft that it is rarely used in jewelry, but rather is mixed with another metal - usually copper or silver - to make a stronger gold alloy, or mixture of metals. The amount of pure gold in an alloy is expressed in karats (versus the carat weight used for measuring diamonds and other gems). The higher the percentage of pure gold, the higher the karat. Pure gold is 24K, while 10K gold - the minimum that may legally be called karat gold in the United States - is 10 parts gold to 14 parts other metal. The standard is 14K in the United States, 18K in Europe, and 22K in India, Japan and some other Asian countries.

"Solid gold" refers to an item that contains some gold (at least 10K) and is not hollow. "Gold-filled" is a process by which a layer of gold (at least 10K) is mechanically bonded to a base metal. "Gold-plated" means that an item has a plating (or coating) of gold alloy of at least 10K, though usually less gold than in gold-filled items.

As the karat weight drops, the metal becomes more durable but less yellow. Sometimes gold that is a lower karat weight will be plated in high-karat gold to enhance the color. This is perfectly acceptable as long as you pay a fair price. Keep in mind that gold plating will wear off with time, and the jewelry may need to be re-plated.

The surface of gold jewelry is treated in many ways to enhance the design. Styles like satin, brushed or matte that create soft, lustrous looks to a hammered finish that produces a bright, irregular surface texture offer consumers a variety of looks.

WHITE GOLD

White gold has the same properties as yellow gold, but it has been alloyed with different metals, like nickel, zinc, or platinum to give it a white color.

White gold should not be confused with platinum, which is much rarer than gold and hence more valuable.

14k White Gold Bracelet

The same karat weight system is used for both white gold and yellow gold. While 18k yellow gold and 18k white gold contain the same proportion of gold, only the remaining 25 percent of the alloy is different. Sometimes white gold is plated with an even whiter metal, such as rhodium (a very rare member of the platinum family), to enhance its appearance.

White gold was developed to give a different look to jewelry. The white color is an excellent setting for very white diamonds, and when used side by side with yellow gold, it creates a striking effect. Jewelry using both white and yellow gold is called "two-tone."

PLATINUM

The most precious metal used in jewelry is platinum. Heavier and more durable than gold, platinum is very expensive, and is alloyed with other precious metals for added strength. Platinum jewelry is usually produced from an alloy of 90 percent platinum and 10 percent iridium, two of the precious metals in the platinum family.

Because of its purity, platinum is excellent for people who are allergic to other metals. Platinum will never tarnish or wear out, and its light color makes it popular for jewelry. Like white gold, platinum settings make white diamonds appear very bright, but platinum is whiter in color and heavier than white gold.

Used extensively in jewelry throughout the first half of the 20th century, platinum was banned for use in non-military applications during World War II. However, it has enjoyed an enormous resurgence in popularity in recent years. Mined in Africa, Russia and the United States (Montana), platinum is not sold according to karat weight. Platinum jewelry that is stamped with a quality mark also shows the percentage of platinum used in the alloy.

SILVER

The standard for sterling silver has remained unchanged since 1300, when Edward I of England established an early trade practice for silversmiths, decreeing that sterling must consist of 92.5 percent pure silver alloyed with 7.5 percent copper. The term sterling refers to the composition of the metal.

Silver is much more plentiful than gold, but silver tends to tarnish, making it less popular in some forms of jewelry. Oh gosh, dear readers, could it be that summer is finally here? It's supposed to be 98 in D.C. tomorrow, so I guess it is. Don't worry - the DCGF won't be going anywhere! But there will be some exciting new changes on the blog beginning next week. Until then, enjoy the final Blog the Blogger for now. It's been a great run and I wanted to end with a blog that's a personal favorite of mine, Righteous (re)Style.

Maria's blog is fabulous because she balances the desire for an eco-conscious lifestyle with the realization that sometimes a girl just needs to go to the mall. And for local folks, she's always on top of the latest, greatest goings-on around D.C. Forthwith, her responses to the DCGF's soon-to-be Famous Five (plus One) questions...

1. What is the first article of clothing you remember that you loved to wear? I have never really been attached to any one article of clothing to the point that I would remember it. I always like to change up my style and my outfits to fit whatever mood I’m in – and try to edit my closet down on a regular basis. However, I do remember a pair of ripped jeans that I used to wear a bit too often in high school . . . mostly to annoy my very fashion-conscious mother. [Check out both of them in the great picture at right. Gotta love those socks, Maria! -the DCGF]

2. Where is your favorite place - besides Goodwill, of course! - to shop for a fashion bargain in the DC area? As a matter of fact, I LOVE Goodwill! There are so many stores to choose from in this area. And besides the great environmental benefits of buying gently used and vintage items, you help a good cause. I recently bought an amazing bright yellow vintage suit at the Glebe Rd. store. Alas, it’s a bit too snug for me. [Oh, the curse of tiny, beautiful vintage clothing! -the DCGF]

Other than Goodwill, I really like Clothes Encounters of a Second Kind at Eastern Market, which is a consignment store. I always find something I like there. Recent purchases have included a $5 Coach belt and a $20 Banana Republic Suede Hobo bag. Also, although I prefer to buy vintage and secondhand items, I sometimes hit H&M to get something a little trendy. H&M is very serious about their corporate social responsibility. You can read more about it here. Plus, they have started to produce an organic cotton line every Spring – but I haven’t gotten any of the pieces yet since they sell out so fast!

3. Where is your favorite place to shop for a fashion bargain outside of DC? I love trolling eBay for vintage finds. There are a number of high-profile vintage stores on eBay now, where pieces get bid up to a price that I usually can’t afford. But, there are still plenty of amazing finds – you just have to do a bit of searching. I also love Etsy for vintage shopping, amazing emerging designers and lots of affordable hand-made things.

4. Who is your current favorite designer? I am loving any designer that is trying to produce their designs in an environmentally sound way – whether by using eco-friendly fabrics or changing the way they make things. I am also finding myself strangely attracted to pleats and folds and pintucks and ruffles (oh my!) this year – anything that has some construction behind it. Shopbop.com recently added an “earth friendly” category and they stock some nice things, like this top by Theory, which is made from organic linen. [I like the pin-tucked one, at left. -the DCGF].

I also like this organic cotton ruffle jacket by Larsen Gray. Another designer I really like is Linda Loudermilk. She is working very hard to not only use eco-friendly fabrics, but to produce her collections in ways that are environmentally friendly, as well. For instance, she recently found a way to produce jeans without all the harsh chemicals and dyes that are usually used (you’d be shocked by the regular process – its like wearing toxic waste jeans!!) I love this little video of her talking about it.

5. If you could own any single item from fashion past or present - money is no object! - what would it be? Hmmmmm, I really have no idea. If I had a lot of money to spend on something, I would probably use it for a trip around the world – and, of course, offset the greenhouse gas emissions from the travel through an organization like Carbonfund.org.

Bonus Question: How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie
Roll center of a Tootsie Pop? To answer this question, I consulted the omniscient oracle that is Google and came up with this: “Research carried out by Miah and Dr. Shin indicates an average of 413 licks. Visit them at www.scoopcitymagazine.com!” So there.

Dang! Once again we end this interview with science. I think perhaps TPWP and Dr. Shin might need to go head to head to get the definitive answer to the bonus question. Valentine's Day: Coming Soon

Valentine's Day is just around the corner - less than a month away, and I'm trying to get the newest Valentine's creations on the Cluny Grey website. A few jewelry pieces that I will be adding are featured here today: first is the heart pendant necklace above made with garnets and a touch of Swarovski crystals here and there. Of course, the lampwork beads of Lynn Nurge, especially the silver-laced heart I used to make the pendant, are the focal points of the entire necklace. The necklace can be found on our Handmade Necklaces page (along with the last heart necklace at the bottom of this post).The Prayer Box Necklace above has some of my favorite silver freshwater pearls, little flower beads and charms, and of course a sterling silver prayer box. This prayer box is a favorite because when it opens, not only is there a place to put a prayer or wish, but a kneeling angel comes out. The prayer box hangs from a flower shape that reminds me of some stylized flowers I've seen in the great cathedrals in Spain and Portugal.
The last necklace also features the beads of Lynn Nurge: the lampwork heart with flowers, rose quartz coloured tabs and mauvey-pink and green rounds. The gemstones here are purple crazy lace agate faceted rondelles; little charms hang from two places on the necklace as well-flowers and hearts - very appropriate for Valentine's Day. The necklace also has a flower on the "S" clasp (from the Thai Karen Hill Tribes).

After 13 years of wearing makeup, I still can’t get my eyes to look that neat and defined. Liquid eyeliner just burns my eyes! I'm also still looking for a natural lipstick color - suggestions welcome :)

Paula Patton is wearing my favorite color and she’s doing it justice. I think the shoes are a little boring but I guess you can’t go wrong with a classic black Christian Louboutin pump. Both Paula and Joy are sporting heavy bangs which is such a cute look with layered hair. No, I don't know where to get this dress but I know Target has a cute, affordable purple dress for $23.

Rashida Jones is ready for summer! She flaunted her shoulders and legs in a sexy, one strap chiffon dress a recent Stella McCartney evemt. Rashida’s style is never offensive, but I wish she would take more of a risk with her hair and/or makeup. How about a chin length bob? She’d also better keep an eye on that clutch…

Ashanti is slowly making her “come back”. Though I doubt the music scene has missed her, her style evolution has been great to watch. This black and white dress is a classic. Twenty years from now, body shape permitting, you could still pull out this dress and wear it like it was a recent purchase. Now if only we could get Ashanti to try another lip gloss color. That frosty pink is so 1982!

Congrats to notjustanyprincess for winning Customized Girl's Fourth Design Contest! She wins $200 and her design will be featured in the May 23rd issue of US Weekly.

We like the design because it stands out, with very big text and nifty use of the soccer ball clipart to replace the “O”. We also like the personalized touch with the name and jersey number. Very nice. On top of all these cool qualities, it also happened to coincide perfectly with our “sports” theme this week. If you're joining a rec league or just cheering for your favorite player, you've come to the right place for custom shirts!

Gutted after finding out a pizza place we wanted to try out was closed, the boyf and I sauntered up Berwick Street towards Oxford Street, wanting to seek solace in Beard Papa's instead...

We walk past one of those non-descript, supremely cheesy/cheap clothing stores that litters the crap end of Oxford Street...

Me: Ok, is it me or is that pink dress in the window looking really nice....

Boyf: I'm thirsty, I need a drink....

Me: Seriously... those different layers of ruffles... that shade of pink... dear lord... I think I'm rather liking it...

Boyf: Ok, but if we're gonna go in there, it has to be a fast and sharp operation...

Me: Ok...we're going in, we're going in, oh dear lord, there's a guy fixing computers and mobile phones there...

Boyf: Don't lose sight of the target! Pink dress, pay, get out and then thirst quenching...

Me: Ok, ok ok *spots pink dress immediately*. Ah...it comes in blue as well...

Boyf: Blue looks cheap. Pink is better.

Me: Ok, ok, ok... oh my god, it's £7! That's disgusting...

Boyf: The till is up there...

Me: *Wide eyed* The jewellery is £1 a piece or 7 pieces for £6... wow, this is very very mint (Susie Bubble language for 'It's so bad, it's cool...')...

Boyf: Pay!

Me: Wow... I haven't paid for a dress with cash in a while...

Boyf: Let's get out through the back door.

*We leave through the suspicous looking side door at the back*

Boyf: I think I could smell 'cheap' back there...

Me: I feel really really dirty... let's go to Beard Papa's and stuff ourselves with cream puffs just to go completely mental...
